Space Week
Space Week
Written by Sam Jordan and edited by fifth and sixth classes
On the 12th of
October, we had the privilege to speak with a retired ESA worker, Juan Miro,
who showed us an interesting presentation on Space. We were in contact via
Skype.
Firstly, we learned
a lot about Juan's career, and how he was involved in the Rosetta Mission. The
Rosetta Mission was the sending of the Rosetta Spacecraft, along with its
lander, Philae, to research the Comet known by scientists as 67P. This mission
was highly publicised and it was very interesting to meet even just one of the
people behind it.
We also learned some
very interesting facts, like that there are caves and caverns beneath the
surface of the moon. As well we discovered that Mars actually used to have an
atmosphere, but something happened and it disappeared. Next we had a look at
some Exoplanets that have potential to sustain life.
After the
presentation, there was a Q&A with Juan. That was also very interesting, we
found out that he specialised in Nuclear Science rather than Space. Then he
heard about ESA and decided to pursue a different career path.
Overall, we all
enjoyed it and we all learned something new, and we hope that someday Juan will
be able to see us all in person! But it might be a while before that happens.
