Estados Unidos Mexicanos, or The United States of Mexico, is home to 126 million people as of 2021, making it the 11th largest country by population in the World. Mexico Has 31 States, and has a capital city called Mexico City, but it wasn’t actually the capital until 2016, the actual capital was a city called Ciudad de Mexico, but its replacement, Mexico City, is now the 8th wealthiest city in the World.

Mexico is located in the Ring Of Fire, a vast area in and around central and South America, consisting of 452 volcanoes, including the world’s smallest, at 43 feet high! It’s still quite a risky place to live, though. Mexico’s border with the USA is the second largest border on Earth, being 2,000 miles long.

Mexico’s national animal is the Golden Eagle, which you’ll find on its flag, eating a snake on top of a cactus, which dates back to its Aztec origins, originating from its Mythology. The cactus could have possibly been the Cardon Cactus, the largest cactus in the World, which the deserts of Mexico are home to.

Mexico also is very famous for its traditional dishes, such as tacos, tortillas, guacamole & churros. These foods have been made famous worldwide and are eaten very frequently by the population.

Another thing Mexico is famous for is wrestling, the contestants are known as Luchadores, the game is known for its masks being so sacred, that removing an opponent’s is against the rules.

Religion is also quite a big aspect of life in Mexico which has a big majority of Roman Catholics, making up to 90% of its population. But their ancestors were a little different, considering hot chocolate sacred!

Mexico’s name also has interesting origins, meaning “The Belly Button of The Moon”. The country is also so large, that it has four different time zones, and is home to over 700 species of reptile, the largest collection on Earth!!

Mexico is also home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, Chechen Itza pyramid, built by the Maya, and there are many more huge pyramids like this which Mexico is known for. Mexico’s geography is also quite beautiful. With a grand total of 1,365 islands scattered along its coast, The whole of the country covers an estimated area of 1.7 Million kilometres squared, with water making up around 2.5% of its entire space!

Fun Fact: in 1913, it is thought that Mexico had three different presidents in the span of one hour! Mad, isn’t it?

Mexico has had many Ancient Empires, including the Maya, the Inca and The Aztecs, the Aztecs being the most recent, ruling Central Mexico when the Spaniards arrived in the 15th Century, which is around the time the oldest school in Mexico was opened, in 1515. They were also quite brutal, sacrificing 1% of their population or 250,000 people every single year to please their gods. Sheesh.

Mexico’s clothing is also instantly recognisable. With their Sombreros, ponchos and colourful dresses for the women, it’s hard not to miss it.

There’s also a special day every year where things get even more colourful, on November 1st, right after our Halloween, Mexicans celebrate “Dia De Muertes”, or Day Of The Dead, people dress up in vibrant clothes, with their faces painted like skeletons. It is the day they believe that their loved ones who have passed on come back to their world for one day, and they celebrate by organising HUGE parades, like St. Patrick’s day. There’s even a Disney movie based around this theme, released in 2017, Coco was a hit film, making a whopping $807 Million! Ker-Ching!
